CONCEAL GUIDE

The dark web, without the mystery

Understand what a dark-web finding can—and cannot—tell you.

Different kinds of visibility

Some pages are easy to find through a search engine. Other information sits behind account access or inside services that are not publicly indexed. Dark-web services are another category, accessed through specialized networks. These labels describe access, not whether a particular claim is true.

Read a finding in context

A result may refer to old information, a reused identifier or a partial match. Start with the source, date and fields involved. A familiar email address alone does not establish that an account is currently compromised.

Choose a useful response

Focus on the information involved rather than the label attached to it. Follow the affected provider’s recovery guidance, review access to the relevant account and keep a record of the steps you take. A monitoring tool cannot promise to erase every copy of information.
